Erythrol (erythritol) is one of the most commonly chosen sweeteners by people struggling with diabetes, overweight and obesity. Its taste and appearance are similar to traditional sugar. Nevertheless, it differs significantly in terms of health properties. It is low in calories and promotes oral health.
Like xylitol and mannitol, erythrol belongs to the group of (so-called polyols) sugar alcohols. This chemical compound is low in calories and has a low glycemic index (equal to 0). This means that it does not suddenly raise blood sugar levels. Erythrol occurs naturally in some fruits (e.g. pears or grapes) and in pollen, mushrooms, seafood, seaweed, lichen and in fermentable beverages (e.g. wine) >. This product is obtained by synthesizing yeast from waste glycerol.
Erythrol resembles traditional table sugar in taste and appearance. Still, it's a little less sweet. It is estimated that it ensures about 60% or even 70% of the sweetness of sugar. It is also worth knowing that the consumption of this product leaves a pleasant and delicate feeling of coolness in the mouth.
Erythrol is not synthesized by the human body, which means that it is excreted unchanged in the urine. Therefore, its consumption does not cause any adverse effects on the digestive system. It is also worth knowing that erythritol can be a valuable element in tooth decay prevention in children and adults due to its similar taste and sweetness to conventional sugar. In addition, erythritol has an antioxidant effect. This means that it is responsible for protecting the body from the harmful effects of free radicals.
