Scientific research clearly shows that milk thistle's health-promoting properties are caused by a complex of chemical compounds commonly referred to as silymarin. More than half of this complex is made up of a flavonoid called silybin. Other substances are: isosylibine, silycristin, silidianin and taxifolin. The content of silymarin in seeds is estimated at around 2-3%.
According to scientific studies, ground milk thistle and in particular the silymarin it contains has a strong antioxidant effect. The ability to neutralize free radicals is particularly noticeable in hepatocytes, i.e. cells that build up the liver. For this reason, milk thistle has been used in the treatment of many diseases of this organ, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. The publications also point to the stimulating properties of silymarin in relation to the proliferation of healthy liver cells and their regeneration. In addition, scientific sources emphasize the anti-inflammatory, antiviral and detoxifying effect of this complex of active ingredients from milk thistle.
Taking into account many scientific reports and studies, milk thistle is said to have a very strong hepatoprotective effect. It can protect the liver from toxic factors, support its function and regeneration.
There are also studies that point to the potential immunomodulatory properties of silymarin. It turns out that this compound can increase the level of T-lymphocytes and interleukins, and lower the level of all types of immunoglobulins. This is a strong reason to believe that supplementing with ground milk thistle may improve immunity.
Many research studies have also focused on milk thistle's anti-cancer properties. Extracts from this plant have been shown to inhibit the proliferation of neoplastic cells in prostate, bladder, ovarian, lung and breast cancer. Similar reports concern oral cavity and skin cancer, among others.
Scientific publications also point to the possible use of milk thistle in the treatment of memory disorders. There are studies that confirm the neuroprotective effects of silymarin on the central nervous system.
Scientists are also studying the effects of milk thistle supplementation on blood sugar levels. There is reason to believe that this plant maintains a constant blood sugar level.
